Word Study

Below you will find our word study groups and your child's words for the week.  Students meet with me every five school days (day of the week varies depending upon days off, etc.). The date at the top of your student's column is the date that group last met with me and received the corresponding word sort. As students master the spelling concept their group is working on in their word study and in their daily writing, I may move them to another group or move their group on to a new spelling concept.  The current groups are based upon how students scored on Donald Bear's Words Their Way Spelling Inventory.

Here is a list of ways to help your child study his or her words:

~ Go on a word hunt with your child.  Read aloud from newspapers, magazines, or books.  Have your child point out words that are examples of the skill of the week.

~ Cut a piece of paper into small “flash card-sized” pieces.  Have your student write a word on each card and sort the words into categories like they did in school.  Have your child mix them up and sort them as fast as possible.

~ Another sorting/categorizing day.

~ Help your think of rhyming words.  Then ask your kiddo to think of a sentence with each word in it.
